Roots of Solidarity, Branches of Love by Lulu Obaditch

Roots of Solidarity, Branches of Love by Lulu Obaditch

Medium: acrylic on canvas board

Dimensions: 9×12 inches

Artist statement: I was inspired by this year’s theme to create a piece depicting the importance and power of relationship-building between folks on the inside and outside. In this painting the two trees represent the two human beings supporting one another and growing together. The heart within each tree symbolizes our unique capacity, as people, for love and care. In the painting, the trees overcome and breach stone walls. The walls depict the restrictions, limitations, and separation of the prison. The trees, which extend beyond and through the walls in the background, demonstrate the power of solidarity and accompaniment. The relationships we build with one another are necessary to envision and realize the abolitionist future we demand.
