Self Portrait by Melanie Ray
I represented myself in this memorial because not only has my life been lost to the system, but I also often feel left behind by friends and family, like I have died and no one came to my funeral.
Medium: Acrylic
[Image description: The piece depicts a woman’s face like a chalk drawing over the background of a red brick wall. Her face and hair are painted in blue and pink, her curly hair flowing wildly. She has long eyelashes and stars above her right eyebrow and below her left eyebrow. Below her face are the words, “to all the lives lost to the system” in green. In the bottom right in yellow are the words “End DBI,” and to the left of that, the words “In loving memory,” in green.]
