Climate Disaster, Stage 1 by Brent Pheto
Medium: Mixed Media Woodcut Print
Size: 23 x 19 inches
Artist statement: Using an imagined space of people, creatures and other forms, I explore social ideas prevalent in the American zeitgeist. To form this world, I utilize a variety of mixed media approaches, such as printmaking, painting, drawing and sculpture. In these works, I discuss the harmful acts of victim shaming and abusive treatment using the visual language of the Climate Crisis and video games.

Image description: A lone figure stands in front of a pile of large bird heads. Each bird head is made to look like they have been cut off from a body. On top of this pile is a figure, who is kneeling, holding a large hunting rifle, and then a wearing a head of a boar like beast as a mask. Under this seen is a text box that reads: While the pre-death meat smell hits you first, the silence of the forest lingers inside you. As you approach the pile, it squeals, “ I know you’re confused, but you’ll understand when you’re older”. Under that text there are “action options” that read, left to right, Talk, Item, Attack and Next. Next is selected.
