Sis. Rosa Parks by Dominic Newsome
Medium: Acrylic on unstretched canvas
Size: 16 x 20 inches
Artist statement: [Artist commenting on the challenge of painting old black and white photos in color] I knew her skin tone in “color” because I’ve seen her face my entire life, so I know her skin and I hope others will enjoy her and give her love and respect. The red, white, and blue backdrop reminds me that she loved America even though she wasn’t loved back.
Image description: A portrait of Rosa Parks based on her booking photo or mug shot from 1956. The background is a torn red, white, and blue fabric, and Rosa wears a vibrant blue jacket and glasses. She holds the number 7053 and gazes at the viewer with a determined but calm face.
